Bolfánek and the devil's fissure

One kilometre southwest of Chudenice rises Žďár hill (583 m), with the former pilgrimage church of St Wolfgang, popularly called Bolfánek. After the nave was demolished, its tower became a lookout. A legend says that Bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg, returning from consecrating the first Czech bishop Dětmar in Prague, stopped on a high hill near Chudenice and decided to found a church. Whatever he and his companions built by day the devil destroyed at night. He had no choice but to promise the fiend the first living soul to enter the new church. A wolf arrived first—in another version a fox, see the symbolism of nearby Pušperk—and the disappointed devil vanished through a hole in the rock with a thunderous crash. He had time to pronounce a fatal curse: when the hole grows large enough for a person, or in another version a pregnant woman, to pass through, the world will end. The hole is now about 10 cm wide. In the chapel adjoining the tower, people still show the stone on which St Wolfgang slept, bearing his imprint. According to tradition, someone with lower-back pain who lays their head on it will feel instant relief.
