What you will find in the atlas

The directory preserves 2,016 stories and 46 beings from the original project’s sources. Search by title, municipality, district, theme or words in a story. Every text has its own address, which you can share.

A legend is not historical evidence

These texts preserve local stories and folklore. We read ghosts, treasures, miracles and other motifs as part of the landscape’s cultural memory. Where an external source is available, we provide a link; for book sources, we retain the page number from the original atlas.

Before you set off

A municipality or distance given here does not guarantee current access. Check opening hours and local rules. The map link searches for the municipality; it does not promise the precise location of the story.

Illustrations

The artwork follows a consistent style of coloured nineteenth-century book illustrations. These are artistic interpretations of legends, not documentary photographs. The original subjects of the illustrations are preserved.
