Some treasures are protected by a lock. The one at Skalka has a different guardian in the old tale: time. North of Abertamy, in a peatland landscape, lies a rocky outcrop called Skalka or Felsl. At first glance, stone. In local legend, however, it is the remnant of a castle hiding its greatest secret inside.
The castle that hid inside a rock
The legend gives the stones a second life. Where a person sees a rock face, the storyteller imagines the interior of an ancient castle. There he places riches worth travelling far for in fairy tales: gold and silver coins, precious stones and pearls. Not one forgotten little chest, but the whole promise of another life.
The original account does not reveal who gathered the treasure or why nobody carried it off. No named knight, no secret map. Only a place, wealth and a condition remain. That condition turns an unassuming rock into an unforgettable story.
Twice in thirty years
The treasure is said to open at Easter, during the Passion readings. But not every year. The tale adds an unusual limit: twice in thirty years. Only then, according to the legend, can it be taken. Which two moments are those? The account supplies no exact calendar.
That may be the most powerful part of this legend. It does not promise that arriving with the right key is enough. It makes people wait. A person may know the place and what it conceals, yet still stand before closed stone. The greatest obstacle is neither strength nor courage, but a moment that cannot be hurried.
What remains when the stone does not open
In this story, Skalka is no guide to finding wealth. It is an image of a landscape into which people placed their hopes. A few sentences turn an ordinary rock into a castle and the silence around it into waiting. Perhaps nobody will ever see the treasure. Yet the story opens whenever someone tells it again.
