Týniště Nad Orlicí · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Captured Werewolf

After his death, the ghost of the wicked local moneylender Matěj, killed by lightning, appeared here. His corpse had a burnt mark on its forehead resembling a blurred cross. Many local people then began to encounter a yellow wolf at night with a similar mark. It was even seen on the moneylender's grave. Near Křivice, a dead woman was found with her throat torn out, supposedly another victim of the werewolf. People said the moneylender left his grave at midnight, roamed the area and searched for his treasure. He was caught below Křivina hill and his heart pierced with a wych-elm stake. But when a grave was dug beside his burial place some time later, his coffin rolled out from the side of the pit. Its lid was supposedly split and forced open along its entire length, and the coffin was empty.
