West of Slavonice stood the village of Pfaffenschlag. Legend says the Swedes destroyed it during the Thirty Years’ War, although it had actually disappeared during the Hussite Wars. As the enemy approached the village, its inhabitants hid their valuables in a butter churn and lowered it into the communal well. Every night at midnight the apparition of a carrier’s wagon drives out of an old house on the Lower Square and heads towards the church. There it turns around the plague column and leaves town through the Dačice Gate. It reaches the Butter-Churn Spring and vanishes. It will supposedly continue these journeys until an honest citizen of Slavonice retrieves the treasure from the spring on Palm Sunday. The person must, however, know an old incantation to recite over the spring. No one has yet succeeded.
