Miletín was the birthplace of K. J. Erben (1811–1870). His birth house contains a memorial exhibition, and a monument stands in the square. He drew most of the material for the ballads in Kytice from the surrounding region. The Wedding Shirts, for example, is set in the cemetery at Byšičky according to local legend. Several ballads treat themes that recur throughout Czech folklore, including The Treasure and The Water Goblin. The Treasure is associated with nearby Červená Třemešná. A possible exception to the regional setting is Záhoř’s Bed, said to draw on legends of Fabián, the Brdy forest spirit, and his “bed” on Baba hill above Hostomice. (See Lázně Bělohrad and Hostomice.)
