One of Bohemia's best-preserved castles, which escaped the 1658 demolition order, is itself the subject of several familiar, especially etymological legends beyond this book's scope. Nearby lies a rocky canyon long called Plakánek, a name folklore explains in several ways. A castle maiden was kept locked up by her father, away from her poor lover. He wandered nearby in vain, longing for her. Rocks grew from his tears, and his restless spirit inhabits them, painfully weeping and wailing. In fierce storms his lament becomes wild fury. People therefore also say the devil settled in these rocks, and one sandstone hill is called the Devil's Castle. The devil supposedly finally carried the beautiful daughter there. Her tears and her lover's sighs mingle throughout the valley, allegedly giving it its name.
