Beyond Chotěboř the Doubrava river flows through a picturesque valley. A castle called Sokolov or Sokolohrady once stood here. According to legend its knight abducted the daughter of the lord of Chotěboř, who took revenge by throwing him from the rocks into the Doubrava. Nearby a rocky cliff also bears the so-called Devil's Table. One tale says a clever farmer once feasted here with the devil and defeated him in a wager. With wild laughter the devil leapt into a pool, and ever since the water has sometimes taken on a bloody colour. In another version a hermit lived here and the devil disturbed his devout meditations. At a loss, the ascetic consulted a priest, who advised him to draw three large crosses with consecrated chalk on the table where the devil always sat. The fiend appeared one last time, saw the sacred marks and vanished for ever.
