In the 17th century the Chotěboř estate belonged to Jaroslav Sezima Rašín of Rýzmberk. He was cruel to his serfs and supposedly found no rest in the grave. Every night at the stroke of twelve his ghost rode out from the eastern side of Chotěboř château. His magnificent carriage was drawn by three fiery black horses. Wrapped in black, he drove through the town for a whole hour. The team made such a din that it often woke all Chotěboř. Eventually someone managed to cut off the ghost's head, and from then on he supposedly never appeared again. (See Svojanov.)
