Holasovice · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Devils Built a Branch of Hell Here

The village preserves the site of an old hillfort, the main seat of the Slavic Holasici tribe that once ruled northern Moravia and gave the village its ancient name. Near Štemplovec, part of Holasovice, rise wild jagged rocks called Hůrka. People say devils were building a new hell here, bringing their kingdom closer so they could lure sinners from this world. They had to finish in twelve hours of darkness. To guard against an unexpected dawn signal, they bought every cockerel nearby. Yet in the morning an old woman went to market carrying one overlooked cockerel, which crowed. The devils’ building immediately collapsed. One devil angrily impressed his claws into a stone, where the marks remain.
