A White Lady once haunted the moated castle in Česká Lípa: a tall white figure with a veil over her head and two bunches of keys on gold rings. A legend tells of a bell-founder, or in another version a cooper, who settled in the deserted castle but could not make his work succeed. His daughter met the White Lady and received a small heap of dry leaves. The girl threw them away, however. A twig that remained turned into gold, and from that moment her father’s luck changed and he successfully finished his work. The original castle was recently demolished apart from tiny remnants, and awareness of this legend is fading with it. Only a Renaissance summerhouse known as the Red House survives within the castle’s original perimeter.
