The Devil's Rock and Well

South of Velké Meziříčí, above Čechovy sady park, a solitary boulder once stood with a hoofprint, supposedly the mark of the Devil's foot. The Devil once wagered here that he could dig the château well and make water flow before the priest finished reading the Gospel at Mass, or, in another version, before a cock crowed. He laboured all night, and in the morning, as the priest began reading Scripture, he finished digging. But there was no water. He took the last stone he had dug out, stamped on it in fury and hurled it beyond the town. The stone was supposedly used in the foundations of a nearby factory.
