Slaný is the centre of a region of menhirs. Nearby, just below the summit of Slánská hora (330 m) on its northern slope, a stele of silica quartzite lies beside the path and is considered a fallen menhir. Others stand near Ledce and Jamníky and in Kamenný Most. According to legend, the town was founded by Holot, a member of King Nezamysl’s retinue. He found a saltwater spring here, from which salt was boiled. Slaný was the Star in the Hussites’ urban and millenarian conception. They adapted Daniel’s prophecy and believed that only five towns would escape the anticipated end of the world: Plzeň, the Sun (of the homeland); Žatec, Segor; Louny, the Moon; Slaný, the Star; and Klatovy, the Radiance.
