Slavoňov Brook runs through a narrow dark valley to join the Metuje at Nové Město. Mert’s Hole, a remnant of silver mining, once lay here but is now blocked. At the valley’s narrowest, darkest point, where rocks hem in the stream, a large flat stone lies in the torrent. A horse-hoof-shaped hollow can be seen on top, long called the Devil’s Footprint. Legend says the devil chased a witch through the air here. He leapt from a high rock and landed so hard that his hoof imprinted the stone.
