North of Miličín rises Vysoký vrch, also called Calvary (698 m). Its summit has three rocky outcrops whose arrangement resembles a lion. It is said that when St Wenceslas withdrew into the Blaník cave with his knights, his faithful lion lay down here to keep watch. Over the centuries it hardened into stone. When enemies approach, the Miličín lion will supposedly roar and awaken St Wenceslas’s army. Blaník and Calvary are also allegedly connected by a secret underground passage, through which a member of the saint’s retinue sometimes comes to visit the lion. At such times fire is said to leap from the stone giant’s mouth.
