Northeast of Lázně Bělohrad rises Kamenná hůra hill. An ancient hillfort once stood at Na kopci (489 m), where ramparts are still discernible. Legend says that a cruel lord’s castle stood there and one day sank into the earth with its accumulated treasures. The lord appears as a black billy goat, guarding his wealth underground. In another version his spirit takes the form of a piebald tomcat. A company of dwarfs is also said to guard the treasure. Bluish flames are often seen over this place, known as the Devil’s Cellar. A wailing White Lady also sometimes appeared here, prophesying destruction for all Bohemia. Only here, beneath Kamenná hůra, would people supposedly be spared the universal calamity.
