Kublov · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Hill of Veles

Northeast of Kublov rises the conical hill of Velis (578 m), where a pagan sacrificial site dedicated to the god Veles once stood. According to tradition, Prince Jaromír founded a church here in thanks for his rescue from the Vršovci, who had captured him at this place. It is said that the altar of the present Church of St John the Baptist, dating from the early 13th century, contains the oak stump to which the Vršovci tied Jaromír.
