Not far from Bílina, between Lhota and Mukov, rises wooded Hradišťany hill (752 m). It was once strongly fortified, as shown by its double ramparts of basalt boulders. In antiquity it served the Celtic Boii and also played an important role in the early Slavic period. According to legend, immense treasures are hidden within the hill, guarded by an evil spirit and sinking deeper into the earth each year. A local forester is said to have pledged his soul to the devil to gain possession of them. He reached the depths safely, but the sight of the guardian monsters filled him with terror. He went mad and eventually took his own life. His spirit still wanders the forest at noon.
