According to legend, the twelve sons of the town’s founder Heřman of Mrdice were robber knights. They hid their treasures in a secret passage from today’s château park to the early Gothic church with rampart fortifications at nearby Kostelec. When this church was built, twelve knights’ figures supposedly appeared on its wall, their faces bowed towards the altar as if begging mercy. People tried several times to whitewash them, but all twelve images eventually reappeared. Seven remained visible until the church’s rebuilding in 1898; the others had supposedly received forgiveness for their many sins.
