Between Bělá nad Svitavou and the settlement of Nová Amerika, a high wooded slope rises on the left. Deep caves in the rock are called Čertovy díry, the Devil’s Holes; Germans called them Querliche. In nearby Březová nad Svitavou, a maid once swore that she would dance even with devils. The devil appeared and carried her here. He took her through an underground passage beneath the church at Banín, seated her on a chair, and she is said still to sit there sewing an iron shirt. A single stitch takes her seven years; when she finishes the shirt, the world will end.
