Two islets in Lake Mácha, one once bearing the legendary Mouse Castle, are supposedly traces left by the devil as he carried boulders from Jestřebí to Bezděz. According to legend, a miller in Staré Splavy once allied himself with the devil. When the devil came for him at the appointed time, they agreed to decide matters by seeing who could pile up the higher hill in a single night. The miller received a magical apron from an old woman and won. As the devil carried the last two enormous boulders from Jestřebí, a cockerel crowed and he dropped them into the lake, where they remain visible as islands.
