In the book, the sprite is a broad concept overlapping with imps, household guardians and other little spirits. Folk interpretations sometimes regarded it as the soul of an unbaptised child. Its behaviour is not uniform: depending on the local legend, it may help a household, guard it or cause harm.

Where it appears

Bohemia and Moravia; homes, forests and treasure sites.

What the old legends say

A sprite can be either helpful or harmful. The traditional rule is to treat it and the home with respect, not to insult it or try to drive it away by force. If it caused trouble, later folk tradition used prayer or the blessing of the dwelling.
