This belief continues the Slavic notion of a protective house spirit and ancestor. The household snake supposedly lived under the threshold, for example, and people left it milk or other food. Legends warn that driving it out breaks the household's protection and brings bad luck.

What the old legends say
Legends advised people not to kill or expel the household snake or damage the place it protects. Its presence was thought to bring the house good fortune. This is a folklore motif: a real snake in a house is more safely removed by a professional, and people should not try to feed or catch it.
