According to the book, he had sparkling eyes and was dressed entirely in red. He appeared chiefly in connection with disrespectful treatment of water. He was not particularly aggressive, however, and vanished immediately when addressed.

What the old legends say
Since he was said to disappear when addressed directly, people were advised to stay calm and show that they had seen him. It was also considered wise to treat water respectfully, deliberately throw nothing into it and not pollute it.
