Hejkal frightens people with loud shouts. According to the book, it was essential not to answer his call: anyone who responded risked the spirit running over and attacking them. Since deep forests once covered almost everywhere, Hejkal is among the most common figures in Czech and Moravian legends.

Where it appears

Forests throughout Bohemia and Moravia, especially also the Plzeň region and Vysočina.

What the old legends say

The basic rule in the legends is very clear: never answer Hejkal's call. A person should remain silent, keep moving and leave the forest. An answer was supposed to reveal the victim's location and bring the spirit straight to them.
