What is strange about stones is how readily people begin to look for living shapes in them: an animal’s back, a bowed head, a face. A legend near Oslavany turned this human ability into a whole story. On a hill called Za klášterem, meaning Behind the Monastery, lie boulders known as the Petrified Flock.

A shepherd who will never lead his flock away

One tale says a stepmother cursed a shepherd boy and his sheep. The boy remains with his flock even when both become stone. The landscape turns into a frozen image of his final day. His face is said still to be recognisable in one of the boulders.

The original account does not say what preceded the curse. Nor does it offer a way to break it. That gives the legend its quiet sadness. We do not wait for a hero with a magic word. We look at a place where, according to the teller, something living came to a permanent standstill.

The second flock had human form

Another version places an entirely different fate on the same hill. It sees nuns from the Oslavany convent in the stones rather than sheep. Fleeing troops, they supposedly took refuge on the hill and prayed to become stone rather than fall into soldiers’ hands. The legend says their wish was granted.

The transformation that means punishment in the first version is thus an answered prayer in the second. The same stillness takes life away in one story and offers a last refuge in the other. Few short local tales show so clearly how differently people can interpret the same place.

Stones make no choices. Storytellers do

We need not combine the two legends into a single event. Their strength lies in their difference. Someone saw a flock and its shepherd in the boulders; someone else understood them as fleeing women. The stone remains the same. What changes is the story people use to explain its shape and their own fears.

When you next look at a rock suggesting a face, you may wonder how many legends began this way. Not with a great event, but with an ordinary glance. Near Oslavany, a hill, a few boulders and imagination were enough. The result is two stories that can inhabit the same silence side by side.
