A mighty castle founded around 1300 once towered above the village of the same name. It was demolished by imperial order in the mid-seventeenth century, and from the nineteenth century the hill itself was damaged by a basalt quarry. Only slight remains survive. A royal treasure brought here by the young knight Trčka is supposedly still hidden inside the hill. Veliš was allegedly connected to Jičín by a secret passage, through which Trčka escaped when the royal army besieged the castle. The army withdrew empty-handed, and the treasure still lies somewhere here. Statues of silver apostles and a golden Christ are also said to be present. A fiery dog guards the riches, allowing no one to obtain them.
