In nearby Jiřetín, as in many places along our borderlands, groups of Vlachs once roamed in search of precious stones and treasure. It is said that one of them owned an old parchment stating that a great treasure lay hidden in the cellars of Tolštejn Castle. He therefore set out for the ruins with his companions. For several nights they searched unsuccessfully. On the final night they discovered a secret passage, but the evil demon guarding the treasure set the ruins ablaze with a bolt of lightning and killed one of the Vlachs. The others fled in terror, so the treasure remains there to this day.
