Šluknov · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Night Hunter

Near Šluknov, by the Czech–Saxon border, the Night Hunter appears. At midnight he rides from Taubenberg mountain to Guttelsberg on a goat with a fiery head, whistling to his two dogs. For many years a forester's lodge stood at the foot of Taubenberg. A forester lived there with his dog and enjoyed rich meals at a time of great famine. At Christmas the local poor came to ask him for alms, but he drove them out of the yard with a whip. A hunt was held here on Christmas Eve, and the forester and his dog took part. All trace of him was lost that day, and ever since he has appeared on dark, windy nights as punishment.
