In 1575, when the settlement of Velké Hory was famous for silver mines whose output exceeded even Jáchymov and Kutná Hora, it was granted mining-town status and named after Emperor Rudolf II. The local miners then commissioned twelve life-size silver statues of the apostles and a golden Easter lamb for the church in Rudolfov. During the uncertain times of later wars, however, the treasure was hidden in an old mine gallery. No one has seen it since, and it probably lies there to this day.
