The Black Madonna of Březnice

The château chapel preserves a copy of the Black Madonna of Roudnice. She is depicted in a black robe with white stars, holding the infant Jesus in a white robe covered in blue stars. Around the Madonna’s head is the Latin inscription Nigra sum sed formosa filia n., “I am black, but a fair daughter of N[azareth]”, paraphrasing a verse from the Song of Solomon, chapter 1, verse 5. An inscription on the back of the painting indicates that the copy was made specifically for King Wenceslas IV.
