Boubín (1,362 m), a mountain now known chiefly for its primeval forest, has long been a mysterious place surrounded by many legends. One of the country’s most powerful sorcerers supposedly once lived here. His name was Žídek, and a whole body of tales about his wonders is told in the surrounding area, in Volary and Horní Vltavice. After death, he is said to have found no peace in his grave and to have appeared noisily on Boubín’s slopes. The tales of the sorcerer Žídek are intertwined with stories of Boubín’s wonder-working doctor, recounting many cases of miraculous healing.
