On a promontory above the Jizera valley stand the ruins of Michalovice Castle with its leaning Putna Tower. A treasure is said to lie hidden beneath it. In Emperor Rudolf II’s time, Italians and alchemists sought the treasure and tried to break through to it. A mighty explosion, accompanied by an enormous column of green fire, allegedly tilted the tower and buried both treasure and seekers beneath it. The fire is sometimes associated with the “green devil” symbol in the little church at Nudvojovice. The treasure still lies under the tower, guarded by the spirits of the crushed seekers. The tower tilted and partly collapsed in the 19th century because of further treasure hunters’ activities. (See Turnov.)
