Coal used to be mined around Merklín. It is said that on the road between Merklín and Radost, at a place called At the Three Stones, a large black dog with fiery eyes waited for miners and accompanied them all the way to the shaft. There it always vanished as if swallowed by the earth. Folk belief held it to be the soul of a wicked mine supervisor who had abused and cheated miners during his life. The apparition first appeared on the day he died.
