A wild tangle of granite rocks rising from a wooded ridge of the Jizera Mountains north above Kateřinky (676 m) is the legacy of a dragon that once lived here. It had an agreement with the local people: in exchange for one human sacrifice a year, it would leave them alone and hunt elsewhere. Eventually it was killed. People still point out where it lay and a bowl-shaped hollow into which slips bearing girls’ names were placed for the dragon to choose its annual victim. The rocks scattered below Dragon Hill silently witness the beast’s final rage as it crushed the rocks in its death throes.
