Lhotice · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Devil’s Hoof

Near the village in the Želivka valley, on the way to Otavožaty, rises a massive granite rock with a hollow known as the Devil’s Hoof. A mill is said once to have stood in the meadow opposite it, owned by a witch who had sold herself to the devil. Once, through her dark arts, she made a Humpolec butcher’s dog lay eggs. She was accused of witchcraft and burned with the mill. The devil allegedly flew out through the chimney and struck the rock above the river so hard with his hoof that he left an imprint visible for all time.
