The promontory above the left bank of the Vltava, now part of Roztoky, has been inhabited since the Stone Age and contains a Slavic hillfort from the early 9th century. This famous archaeological site is associated with many myths about the founders of the Bohemian state. Tradition says that a golden hen with twelve chicks lies hidden in the filled-in well here: a pagan idol used by priests for divination. It was buried when Prince Bořivoj was baptised in Moravia and brought Christianity to this place as well.
