Many boulders called the Devil’s Stones are scattered across the slopes between the ruins of Lanšperk and Žampach castles. Devils were supposed to build the lord of Lanšperk a bridge to Žampach in a single night. The nobleman signed the pact in his own blood and undertook to catch every rooster in the area. But one was forgotten. It crowed during the night and thwarted the devils’ work. The devils flung the stones about the surrounding countryside, where they remain today. According to regional legend collector D. Filip, the tale may echo the name of an early member of the knightly family of Žampach, recorded around 1400 under the nickname Čert, “Devil”.
