A strange legend widespread in Bohdaneč was recorded by F. A. Heber in Böhmens Burgen, Vesten und Bergschlösser (1847). It made the town the birthplace of Rýbrcoul, the legendary spirit of the Krkonoše Mountains. He was the offspring of the continuing love between a dead man, or his ghost, and his former fiancée, who was still alive. His dreadful father first helped his son gain dominion over Kunětická hora, where young Rýbrcoul began his demonic career, later moving to the Krkonoše.
