Klapý (Házmburk) - Hrad · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The alchemical fortress

After 1335 the castle belonged to the Zajíc family, who renamed it Házmburk. Under Jan Zbyněk Zajíc an alchemical laboratory operated here with numerous Italian alchemists. Jan Zbyněk of Házmburk, residing at Budyně, lost all his property through alchemy, which the source attributes particularly to the Italian alchemists and the Jewish practitioners Eliakam of Libochovice, Aron of Litoměřice and Eliud of Třebenice.
