Around 1850 a lady's maid, Kristina Žebráková of Čelákovice, climbed the staircase of Jirny's Baroque château and noticed a bluish ball of fire floating behind her. Frightened, she ran upstairs, but it followed. Screaming, she burst into a room. The ball pursued her and struck the wall with a thunderous crash, broke through and entered the neighbouring stable, killing two cows. At the time it was thought to be ‘household fire’, a poorly defined, usually harmless apparition sometimes seen indoors.
