Jemniště · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The pits where the princess sank

A princess once lived in the Baroque château of Jemniště who was so vain that she wore shoes made of dough. Her servants had to bake new ones every day. Day after day she wore them from the château to the adjoining chapel containing the family tomb. After death she appeared at midnight in a red glow, seated in a fiery carriage drawn by two pairs of fiery horses, travelling from the château to its chapel. Pits are still shown in the garden where she sank into the ground as punishment.
