The small town of Velký Újezd lies between Olomouc and Lipník nad Bečvou on both sides of the old road, with the Oderské vrchy hills rising above it. There lies the notorious place called Smolno or Smolná, where suicides and those who 'had no peace in their graves' were buried from all over Moravia. It is east of the sources of the Odra, on the boundaries of three estates: Lipník, Veselí and Potštát. It consists of a triangular clearing. A settlement once stood here but vanished long ago. Diabolical apparitions appear here, and people gave the place a wide berth. Smolná is mentioned in many Moravian legends, even from distant places, although its precise location was usually unknown to the storytellers.
