Chomutov · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The mummified chimney sweep

Beneath St Ignatius's church is an old Jesuit crypt containing preserved mummies. One coffin supposedly holds a corpse clearly identifiable by its clothes as a chimney sweep. In the previous century a story told that a sweep fell into the chimney of the Jesuit college and vanished. Later he was found in the crypt near the door, among scattered coffins, sitting with his fingers gnawed, apparently having died insane from hunger. He was then placed in a coffin among the bodies of Jesuit monks. From that time it was certain that ventilation shafts from the crypt led into the chimneys.
