In a corner of the old monastery's square courtyard stood an altar protected by an iron grille. Behind it was a statue of a black Virgin Mary, supposedly once white. Enemy troops were once quartered in the monastery, called Loreta. One midnight the whole Loreta shone brightly. The alarmed soldiers saw the statue of the Virgin, suddenly entirely black, threatening them. Terrified, they departed at once, saving Chlumec from pillage. The former monastery now contains flats.
