He used to be portrayed as a figure made of spruce cones, a bearded forester with a pipe and a knobbly stick, rather like Krakonoš in the Krkonoše mountains. This is Fabián, the lord of the Brdy forest. He lived on the summit of Baba above Hostomice, where he had a castle and once brought a young wife. His former lover, a witch, took revenge on him: one stormy night the castle vanished with all its inhabitants. Fabián became the good spirit of the local forests. His long, drawn-out hooting could be heard, but it was unwise to imitate it. Of the enchanted castle, only a small crag on the ridge remained, called Fabián's Bed. It is thought that this motif inspired K. J. Erben to write the ballad Záhoř's Bed.
