In 1734 Eugen Václav Vrbna of Bruntál inherited the Hořovice estate. Tradition says he supported alchemy and frequently held feasts for alchemists at the château. His eagerness and credulity also benefited many swindlers. He completed the new château in Hořovice, where a large allegorical fresco of the Sciences and Arts once stood above the staircase. In the park is the so-called Sun Gate, made from an artistic alloy, a striking hermetic symbol from the late 18th century. One kilometre north of the town stands an imitation ruined castle tower. An artificial cave was also built nearby. The ruin still survives.
