Legend says that around 1211 a net-maker’s family from Lužec was miraculously healed here after, following an apparition of the Virgin Mary, he brought her statue from Žitava and hung it on a tree. Hejnice was therefore long called “Our Lady on the Tree Stump”, and great pilgrimages came from far away. A chapel was later built, followed by the Gothic Church of the Visitation, remodelled in Baroque style. A Franciscan monastery also stood beside it.
