Drahomyšl · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Enchanted Monk

By the junction on the road to Strkovice stands a menhir long called the Enchanted Monk. It is a flat sandstone slab rising more than two metres above ground. A legend links it to a maiden from Žatec who fell unhappily in love with a young monk. They fled together, but the monastery’s suspicious prior followed. He pronounced a terrible curse that turned the young monk to stone. The girl was accused of witchcraft and blamed for her lover’s fate. Afraid of torture, she confessed. According to Žatec’s criminal records, which describe the event, she was burned in 1668.
