Dolní Kounice · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Remains of Torture Victims in a Secret Passage

Beneath the castle at Dolní Kounice, a long underground passage slopes down through the hill and ends at the water level of the Oslava. In side recesses, bones of people tortured to death centuries ago in the dreadful pit can supposedly still be seen in the earth. The monastery of Rosa Coeli, founded in 1181, stood here. Hussites burned it down. After its demise, various religious sects spread here: Anabaptists, Waldensians and the Bohemian Brethren.
